We have been fighting to save Bertie Park Recreation Ground for more than 5 years. Oxford City Council want to build social/affordable housing. But more housing just increases the need for our recreation ground.
(2nd) consultation now finished: 3 support, 357 object.
Even the police object details here. OCC say Bertie Park Recreation ground isn’t needed because this area is working class. The need for social housing trumps our need for a recreation ground.
OCC have just published new plans for Bertie Park. They want to shrink the recreation ground down to 14% the size. They want to provide a new Multi Use Games Area and playground. The MUGA would be 4m shorter. The recreation ground is also smaller. Only a small part is used for play equipment. There would be nowhere for free play. More details here. Or see the display in the park!

In January 2023, the Save Bertie Park campaign started a survey to find out what the local population thought about Oxford City Council’s plans for Bertie Park. Click here for the results of the survey.Click here to help us to raise enough money for a legal challenge.
This could go to planning committee in the new year. Cllr Railton thinks that the decision could go either way.

Thorny problem for Bertie Park
Bertie Park Recreation ground has a play area with 14 items of equipment. So, when the council’s first drawings showed only 4, we complained. They reassured us that there could be “as many as 9 items of equipment” in their new play area. We wondered how. Now we know! The new plans show a toddler…
What the police say about Bertie Park
The MUGA and the play area are very close to homes. There are 2 problems with this: OCC want to build a long, narrow footbridge between Bertie Park and the land behind Wytham Street (site B). There’ll be “no option for escape” if someone is “approached by a hostile actor.” Site B “does not have…
At some point, we must draw a line and say if we want [Oxford] to be a great place for people to live, then we also have to protect the things that make it great: the things people love, like Bertie Rec.

Good evening
We must change this government immediately by calling for a general election.
I support your cause. I hope your park is saved in the near future. Social justice will prevail, and your park will be saved.
